Taeo UI Officially Discontinued
Published by Taeo on Monday, February 15, 2010

It is with great regret that I write this post. If any of you have been following the forums you will know that this announcement is somewhat overdue. Taeo UI is officially being discontinued.

I will be keeping this site and the downloads section up and running for the foreseen future but Polydwarf and I will no longer be updating the compilation. When we started this project we greatly underestimated the amount of upkeep we would have to do to keep it working smoothly after each major patch. Without going into details, we simply did not have enough time to clean things up after the 3.3 patch dropped.

While I am sad to close the doors on Taeo UI I am happy to bring you an announcement for my latest project. After realizing I could not keep up with Taeo UI I wanted to try a different type of project where the users themselves would supply the content and updates.

That said, I welcome you all to check out WoW UI Gallery. WoW UI Gallery is a community for custom WoW user interface enthusiasts. If you’ve ever gotten involved with the custom UI scene you are likely familiar with the “Post Your UI” threads that crop up on nearly every WoW related forum. These threads are a great place to go when you’re looking for some inspiration for your own UI. However they tend to grow to monstrous size very quickly and it’s difficult to find exactly what you’re looking for.

The WoW UI Gallery aims to solve this by providing a single place for everyone to submit their UI complete with hosted screenshots and vital details such as class, screen resolution, and addons used. The submitted UI’s are categorized and searchable making it easy to find that Tanking Death Knight UI you’ve been looking for! You can also rate and comment on each UI. Once you’re done browsing you can join the conversation in the forums too!

I’d like to thank everyone who has downloaded and supported Taeo UI during it’s admittedly brief lifespan. And I apologize to those who were counting on us to keep it going. Polydwarf and I have definitely learned our lesson - don’t bite off more than you can chew!

Thanks,
Signing out, Taeo

  1. Sorry to hear this had to happen, the UI is beautiful. It does sound like your heart wasn’t in it any more though, otherwise I think you’d fight to keep it alive in some way (like getting other people to do the upkeep).

I came across WoW UI Gallery on my own and I have to say its a great idea (it sorta takes the idea of WoW.com’s UI of the week and expands on it) but the execution so far is a little.. off.. The big close up thumbnails make it impossible to tell whats going on till you actually click to see the picture, then you find out you didn’t like it any way and wonder why you bothered.

Best part about the site though is, as you said, the organization. It is really easy to find specific type of UI.. Only problem is there’s no guarantee that all the addons will be listed for the , so it makes for some unnecessary guess work..

  2. Thanks for the feedback! I’m sorry to discontinue Taeo UI as well. It really was a huge undertaking and we just didn’t have the time to keep it in working order. If anyone wanted to step forward and take over the development we would be glad to help them get started.

As for the thumbnails on WoW UI Gallery - we give the poster the ability to choose their own thumbnail to upload. While most people just pick a full sized UI picture (which is then resized dynamically on the server) some choose to upload framed/stylized thumbnails. This is their choice so there’s not much I can do about that. If anything, the UI’s that are posted with zoomed thumbnails like this seem to me more popular than others. However, you could argue that this is simply due to the fact that people are clicking to see the full view only, lol.

I thought about the possibility of having a tooltip open when hovering over a thumbnail with the larger image. This would be somewhat difficult from a development perspective but could potentially eliminate the issue you have brought up.

  3. Hello i am saddened to hear this but a ligh in the end of the tunnel is that I would love to take over this UI and continue it at my best effort.

  5. Hey Epsynus,

I’d be glad to have you take over the project. I only ask that you clearly indicate that it is a re-release if you put it up anywhere for download.

If you work on it and can show Poly and I that you are serious I’d also be glad to give you access to this site (admin for the blog/forum/ftp/etc).

  6. Thanks i will get right on it :)

  7. So bad to hear! I just heard of this UI, it looks absolutely beautiful, but a shame that I can’t use it soon anymore…

But thank you Epsynus, if you want to update ;)
